i'm now at orchard central!! saw the christmas light ups along orchard road today and am seriously not impressed. they look really cheap and distasteful. it looked like they recycled a fair bit of the decorations from previous years' christmas trinkets, if i can call them that. this year's theme looks like a fairytale christmas with all those oversized christmas blobs and metallic cylindrical thingys hanging from the huge trees along the streets. my favourit was when the hung humongous amounts of flickering LED bulbs over the streets, mimicking a twinkling night sky. it was totally beautiful and breathtaking. the lights stretched all the way from Tanglin shopping centre, which is near the botanical gardens to plaza singapura, which is after the Istana.
but as you know, the monsoon season is usually from november till february the following year in tropical singapore. and due to torrential rains and strong winds, a section of the lights crashed into the street underneath. luckily it happened in the wee hours of the morning, so no one was hurt. from that year onwards, extensive decorations hung freely over the streets was prohibited by law.
but pity, that was the most beautiful and stunning christmas decoration i have ever seen along orchard road.
but the malls' individual christmas decorations are actually not that bad this year, considering the financial turmoil that happened this year. Paragon did a great job with its giant towering christmas tree. and i can't wait for the new kids on the block to put up their christmas decorations. i'm sure their decorations will be just as stunning.
